Located just over 1km from the city centre in Dublin’s north inner city, for generations, Grangegorman was synonymous with the confinement of vulnerable people in a variety of institutions – an asylum, a prison and a workhouse. Today, the area is being revitalised into a new city quarter with a diverse mix of uses, including a world-class integrated campus for Technological University Dublin (formerly DIT), the Health Service Executive, and the local community in a way that is sensitive to the context of the site.
Grangegorman Histories aims to raise awareness of the multi-faceted histories of this area through an ambitious, wide-ranging and challenging programme that is always respectful and recognises the sometimes-distressing nature of personal stories. The Royal Irish Academy and the Grangegorman Development Agency will lead this programme of research and shared discovery.
The Grangegorman Histories Foundation Document details the purpose of the project and some of the events and activities that will take place over its lifetime. The programme of activities will focus on three identified pathways: people, places and practices.
