IHTA field trip to Ballyshannon, Co. Donegal

The IHTA team went on tour to Donegal last week to prepare for the next atlas on Ballyshannon. A walking tour by author Angela Byrne took place on Thursday 18 July 2024.

Attending the walking tour were Donegal Heritage Officer, Joe Gallagher, Curator of Donegal County Museum, Judith McCarthy, Barry Sweeny from the Ballyshannon Regeneration Group, Anthony Begley from County Donegal Historical Society and the IHTA team of Michael Potterton, Howard Clarke, Ruth McManus, Anngret Simms, Sarah Gearty, Jennifer Moore and SPUR student Alison Roche. The tour commenced at the site of the original castle, along the Mall and Mall Quay, to the site of the Assaroe Falls and the famous fly tiers at Rogan’s fishing tackle manufactory on East Port at the site of the original fourteen-arch Ballyshannon Bridge from the late seventeenth century.

A meeting followed in Dorrian’s Hotel to discuss the potentials and possibilities of the forthcoming Irish Historic Towns Atlas, no. 32 Ballyshannon by Angela Byrne.

 

Heritage Week in Ballyshannon

There will also be a number of events taking place during Heritage Week on Friday 23 August that explores Ballyshannon’s Global Connections  from a history paddle to a walking tour, talk and exhibition.
