Speaker: Dr John Gibney, Assistant Editor with the Royal Irish Academy’s Documents on Irish Foreign Policy programme

After the upheaval of the Irish revolution, what kind of society emerged in the Irish Free State after independence? How did Irish people live, survive, and even entertain and enjoy themselves? All too often we think of this decade in terms of politics, but there was more to Irish life than the purely political and much of that is revealed by the records held by the National Archives and recently showcased in its landmark ‘Society & State’ exhibition. This illustrated talk will use a selection of those records to paint an unexpected picture of Irish life in the early years of Irish independence.
