Launch of vol 42 of the Irish Journal of Earth Sciences, dedicated to Professor Sevastopulo
On 28 August, the President of the Royal Irish Academy welcomed guests to a special reception at Academy House to launch volume 42 of the Irish Journal of Earth Sciences, dedicated to Professor George Demetrius Sevastopulo.
Attendees included members of the Sevastopulo family, friends and colleagues of George from the geoscience community, the journal editors and several contributors to the volume.
George was a long-time Member of the Royal Irish Academy and was first elected to membership in 1988. He quickly became involved in various Academy activities, being a member of the Praeger Committee that dispenses funds for natural history research projects, and the Academy nominee on the board of The Irish Naturalist journal. He also served at times on what was then the National Committee for Geology, and more recently chaired the Culture and Heritage Working Group. George was a Vice-President of the Academy from 2003 to 2004.
Known to many geologists as ‘the purple journal’, the peer-reviewed Irish Journal of Earth Sciences (IJES) has been published by the Royal Irish Academy since 1984. It publishes original scholarship, discussion papers and reviews on any broad topic of Earth science interest, geology and palaeontology.
