Science Advice for Policy by European Academies (SAPEA)

Providing independent scientific evidence to the European Commissions: how it works.

The Royal Irish Academy is a member of the Science Advice for Policy by European Academies (SAPEA) network.

SAPEA is part of the European Commission’s Scientific Advice Mechanism which provides independent scientific evidence and policy recommendations to the European institutions by request of the College of Commissioners.

SAPEA gathers the best available scientific evidence on the topic.

The evidence gathered by SAPEA is used by the Group of Chief Scientific Advisors to make policy recommendations.

The Royal Irish Academy identifies and nominates suitably qualified Irish based experts for membership of SAPEA Working Groups. Experts are nominated solely on the basis of their scientific expertise and do not have to be a member of the Royal Irish Academy.

If you are a researcher based in Ireland and you are interested in joining a SAPEA working group for a forthcoming topic, please approach policysecretary@ria.ie
