Rachel Murphy joins the IHTA Team

We are delighted to welcome Dr Rachel Murphy as mapping and editorial assistant to the Irish Historic Towns Atlas in the Royal Irish Academy.

Rachel has been involved with the IHTA since 2013 on various digital initiatives of the programme, most recently the Digital Atlas of Cork/Corcaigh. She is the current Chair of the IHTA Digital Working Group. She has contributed to the international digital developments with our other European colleagues.

Rachel is a social historian of modern Ireland. A graduate of the University of Oxford, she holds a PhD in Digital Arts and Humanities (History) from University College Cork. She was a post-doctoral researcher on the Deep Maps: West Cork Coastal Cultures project led by Claire Connolly, MRIA and Professor Rob McAllen (UCC), and on Death and Burial Data: Ireland 1864-1922, led by Professor Ciara Breathnach (UCC). She taught on and was course director of the MA History of Family at the University of Limerick from 2018 to 2024.
