THE ROYAL IRISH ACADEMY IS IRELAND'S LEADING BODY OF EXPERTS IN THE SCIENCES AND HUMANITIES

The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Members of the DIB’s research team will be on hand to take visitors through the DIB and explain how entries are written.

As Ireland’s national biographical dictionary, the DIB is an authoritative reference work containing almost 11,000 lives, for anyone interested in Irish history, society, and culture. When initially launched in 2009, Seamus Heaney greeted its publication as ‘an epoch-making event in the history of Irish scholarship. It changes the state of knowledge in the twenty-first century as decidedly as the Ordnance Survey did in the nineteenth.’

Hosted by the RIA as an open access repository, the DIB is freely available to the public (www.dib.ie).
